Fixing the pedal on the induction forge
Переглядів 166Рік тому
Sorry for the video format, this was shot in portrait mode for instagram. My induction forge pedal was sticking, not activating and deactivating the heat cycles as it should. The fix was fairly straightforward. #induction #forge #blacksmith
Treadle hammers vs tire hammers (and which one I would choose first)
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
I use both the Clay Spencer in-line treadle hammer and Clay Spencer tire hammers in my shop on a daily basis. They’re both phenomenal tools. In this video I give a video reply to an email from an instagram follower, Herb where he asked my opinion on them and which one I would choose first. I hope this helps! This is a technique I use to get the most length out of railroad spikes for various forging projects, steak turners, knives, meat forks, etc.

What dies should I choose for my power hammer?
I like it
Hey man kinda weird question. What voltage dose it run? My shop only has 120.
Excellent description of setting up tools and protect the flypress! Thanks
I've been told that that is not actually meant to be a pritchel hole but us simply a mounting hole so you can bolt that end of the anvil down.
If that is true, that is a decision made by someone who never uses an anvil.
Whats the advantage of London pattern placement of the hardy hole and pritchel hole vs ... thats a german pattern anvil below the vevor right?
Ow, its kinda loud, though it being on another anvil doesnt help that
Most horseshoers i know stick to 1.5 to 2 lb hammers. We do way to much work over the horn for big hammers, that and shoes just aren't that big 😂
Thanks for this. I have most of these, and of course Mr. Aspery's, but didn't know about the Blacksmith's Journal compendium, so will start looking!
Thanks for the vid, Derek. Very good info here. Cheers, brother
I was there the whole weekend and was totally amazed at the how every one worked together . John was a great host for this event. I got photos and video of it all.
Good job. Thanks
Me 80 years old mine mechanic. Love to see the great work and crews.
Your thoughts on the spring power hammer, the type that uses an automotive spring. Thanks for all the knowledge and encouragement you bring to everyone.
Good job
Dude. That's so helpful! Thanks!
Cool tool!!!!! Curious as to what the “griping” jaws are made of? Are these something you forged or ?
Gotta say i envy every guy in the class. I'm too old to take advantage of this sort of thing now.
Who came up with the drill mixer to agitate the oil during the quench? I bet he's a painter or a dry waller. Great idea❤
As a long time hobbyist blacksmith with many years of using both treadle hammers and trip hammers,, I think you did a great job here. George Dixon used to say of the treadle hammer: "It's like having a striker who never comes in late or drunk".
SOY DE MÉXICO.... CÓMO ME PUEDO HACER DE UN MARTIIO DE ESOS.... PLANOS PIEZAS
I have a scanned PDF copy of the swing arm Gade-Marx style treadle hammer. I'm in the process of building one now as my friend has a lot of the spare parts kicking around already.
If anyone wants a copy I can make it available.
Great information! thanks for sharing!
Useful stuff thankyou for sharing
Por quanto vcs vendem um progeto para SE fazer um Power Hummer
I do not sell them
Thanks for sharing. I've been slowly working on tooling for my flypress and this has given more some more ideas.
I li e in a residential area, can the tire hammer run on a dirt floor? And if not what kinda foundation? I have an attached garage and a neighbor 20 ft from said garage. If it can be anchored to dirt, how far will it vibrate?
Your neighbor will hear and feel it.
@derekmelton makes me sad lol, hydraulic press it is.
Very sensible advice. 👍
Thanks for the review Derek, a question if you will. This Anvil is advertised as a cast steel anvil, then further down in the description says Drop Forged, which one ?
Oye kiero uno martinete en cuanto me lo mandas a mexico🇲🇽
Do you have plans and materials list available for tire hammer?
As a second anvil in the shop I’m thinking about the 132 lb’er…. Cleaner edges than my antique one I have…
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience 👍🏻
Derek awesome review. Hopefully you get great use out of it for many years to come my friend. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Forge lit. Keep Making. God bless.
Bondo?! Whatt lol
VERY common on Chinese anvils.
Hi Clay Spencer? Tom Copland in Ayr Scotland. Do you have plans for that power hammer build, I am trying to rebuild my Blacksmiths shop at my house as I am to old to be traveling. Any Advice would be nice.
Сколько же счастливых людей) Хорошо поработали!
how do they acount for work peace thickness ?
Dorky music.
Show me your videos. I’ll wait.
Love that reply :) I'll be building a power hammer soon enough. THAT's the music I'll be hearing and these videos are just pure inspiration. There's always that volume button too. Nice video! @@derekmelton
What size square Stock is that
3/8
@@derekmelton About 10mm for those not in the US or N. Korea.
Where did you get your micros mark
Jera Metal Arts makes my makers mark stamps
Thanks for the video. Getting ready to make my first cross, and this video is just what I needed. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find a cart that fit that 25L cooling unit so perfectly?
You are not doing it correctly, READ the welder manual. Been doing it for over 50 Years, so I do know what I am talking about. Get the slot welded up in the table blade plate too before you have an accident when cutting tiny pieces. The blade could drag the part into the slot and jam.
I have a sheet metal insert I’ve laid over the slot. Thanks.
What bandsaw do you have?
Two of them, the old green one at the beginning is a big Wilton and the other one I use for the intersecting cuts is a 1954 DoAll 1612
Thank you for putting this video together. How could a person turn a railroad spike into a long circular rod? Thank you again for the insights you shared in this video.
I'd draw it out to an even diameter and then use a circular swage or form to bend around.
@@derekmelton Thank you for the insightful response. My brother is our family's handyman - I will relay your instructions to him and he will understand what you mean. Thanks again, Sir.
Question: I got this system and did 3 of my knives…a couple pocket knives and a Buck 119. After the 3rd sharpening almost all of the grit is gone. Should it come off this soon or am I doing something wrong? Great system…I love it.
But can you realistically draw down with a treadle hammer faster than by hand?
No, treadle hammer isn’t suited for that kind of work. Think “hey, I could really use a striker right now” That is what a treadle hammer is for
Maybe not faster, but sometimes "smarter"? Trade a dozen hammer blows for a few leg presses, and give your arm a rest. With flat dies, you can smooth out and straighten easily, it's like having a striker hitting a flatter. With tapered open or closed dies, you can finish forging tapers on square or round, to be consistent and smooth.
Super exited to go to this... wish they had a class like this for bandsaw mills too!
I love these guys, no masks or distancing, they know it’s all BS😂😂😂😂
We still took flak for that. I am also still deleting comments on this video from the Karen’s telling us we should have been masked. It’s ridiculous.
That’s alright Derek guys with real common sense like all of you will prevail when all this crap is over and Trumps back in the White House!
I'm sorry, I am not a complainer, but those welding stations need to be surrounded by tinted screens. I have worked with people whose eyes were damaged by peripheral welding.
That would be ideal.
Now, this is a class I would sign up for any day!!
